BALLET ASSESSMENT PATHWAYS AT MONSTERS

At Monsters, our priority is that every dancer feels supported, confident, and proud of their achievement when participating in ballet assessments. Dancers develop at different rates, and not every assessment format is the right fit at the same time, which is why we offer two equally valid assessment pathways.

Both options celebrate progress, commitment, and growth. One is not better than the other.

OUR PHILOSOPHY & TEACHER DECISION MAKING

At Monsters, self-achievement is the focus, not comparison. Both Class Awards and Graded Exams:

Sit on the same wavelength

Hold value

Recognise dedication, progress, and effort

Our teachers will thoughtfully decide which option is most suitable for each dancer, either individually or as a class, based on readiness, wellbeing, and the guarantee of a positive experience.

This ensures that:

Dancers feel comfortable and supported

Assessments build confidence rather than pressure

Every dancer walks away feeling proud of what they have achieved

No matter which pathway is chosen, all ballet assessment participants at Monsters are equally celebrated.

WHAT IS A CLASS AWARD?

Class Awards are an unaccredited assessment option available for Monsters students Primary to Grade 5

They are designed for students who our teachers feel that a formal accredited exam is not the most appropriate option for them at that point in time, while still allowing them to:

Work towards a clear syllabus

Be assessed on their ballet development

Receive recognition for their achievements

Gain valuable experience in an exam-style environment

HOW CLASS AWARDS WORK

The syllabus includes a selection of exercises and one dance

The class is led by the teacher

An examiner observes and assesses the class

Class Awards may be selected by the teacher for:

Students who have joined later in the year

Dancers who have experienced injury or illness affecting attendance

Classes where an alternative assessment pathway is more suitable

Class Awards also provide excellent preparation for accredited exams should a dancer choose to move towards them in the future.

WHAT IS A BALLET EXAM?

Graded Ballet Exams are available for Monsters students Primary to Intermediate.

In this format, students perform three different dance components, allowing them to demonstrate a range of technical, musical, and performance skills within a formal exam setting.

Graded exams suit dancers who are ready for:

Independent performance

A structured, externally assessed environment

Demonstrating their skills across multiple components

WHAT IS A MOCK EXAM?

A Mock Exam is a practice exam designed to help dancers feel prepared, confident, and familiar with the exam environment before their ballet assessment.

The mock exam:

Mirrors the structure and expectations of an exam or class award

Allows dancers to practise performing in an exam-style setting

Helps teachers identify areas to refine before the final assessment

Reduces nerves by making the exam process feel familiar and manageable

Mock exams are an important part of our preparation process and support a positive, calm experience for all dancers.

MOCK EXAM TIMING

For 2026, mock exams will take place in Term 4 and will be scheduled as follows:

Held on a Saturday

Scheduled approximately two weeks prior to the ballet exam period

Expected timing: Week 4 or Week 5 of Term 4

Dancers will be allocated a mock exam time around their usual class time

All mock exams will be held at Monsters of Dance

Specific times and schedules will be communicated closer to the date.

Intermediate Foundation Students

For dancers enrolled in Intermediate Foundation, we will be offering either Session 1 OR 2 in 2027.

A final decision regarding whether Intermediate Foundation students will sit Session 1 or Session 2 will be made by mid–Term 1, 2026. This decision will be based on dancer readiness and what will best support a confident and positive exam experience.

Families will be informed as soon as this decision is confirmed, allowing ample time for preparation and planning.

As always, our priority is to ensure that dancers feel well-prepared, supported, and set up for success.

if any new students in intermediate foundation are yet to be on pointe our teachers will decide their readiness and organise an assessment

EXAM CLASS ATTENDANCE

Our Company Ballet program in 2026 is to be treated in the same way as all other Company classes in regard to attendance, effort, and commitment.

As Company dancers, consistent attendance is a key part of the commitment to both individual growth and the wider team. In 2026, attendance at all exam classes will be mandatory.

In recent years, there may have been some increased flexibility around attendance in certain classes. Moving forward, we are making expectations more consistent and structured, as regular attendance plays a significant role in dancer progress, confidence, and overall development — particularly in the lead-up to assessments.

We believe this clarity will best support our dancers in seeing meaningful growth and ensuring fairness across the team.

If a dancer is unable to attend an exam class, communication must follow the same process as other Company classes:

Absence notifications submitted via the parent portal

An email sent directly to the Head of the Company Program

Clear communication helps us support each dancer appropriately and plan effectively for the class as a whole.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support as we work together to provide the strongest possible training environment for our Company dancers.

PLEASE NOTE:

All dancers must be wearing their exam leotard every week
